Linux Lite 7.8 Final is now available for download. Linux Lite 7.8 comes with 12 completely new re-writes of 12 of our applications as we move towards changing the majority of our applications to Python and GTK 4 in Series 8. These include: Lite Auto Login, Lite Desktop, Lite DPI, Lite Firewall, Lite Network Shares, Lite Software, Lite Sounds, Lite Sources, Lite System Report, Lite Theme Manager, Lite Updates, Lite User Manager, Lite Welcome. We're most excited about the new Lite Software. We've added more than 20 popular applications. BleachBit, Darktable, KDE Connect, Kdenlive and Stacer, to name a few. We've updated the System tab in System Monitoring Center to include more system information. For over 11 years now, OPNsense is driving innovation through modularising and hardening the open source firewall, with simple and reliable firmware upgrades, multi-language support, fast adoption of upstream software updates, modern IPv6 support, as well as clear and stable 2-Clause BSD licensing. 26.1, nicknamed Witty Woodpecker, features almost a full firewall MVC/API experience as automation rules have been promoted to the new rules GUI, Suricata version 8 with inline inspection mode using 'divert', assorted IPv6 reliability and feature improvements, router advertisements MVC/API, full code shell command escaping revamp, default IPv6 mode now using Dnsmsaq for client connectivity, Unbound blocklist source selection, an automatic host discovery service, plus much more. The upgrade path for 25.7 will likely be unlocked on January 29, which is probably tomorrow if anyone is asking why it is not there yet.
The GParted team is pleased to announce a new stable release of GParted Live. This release includes GParted 1.8.0, updated packages, and other improvements. Items of note include: includes GParted 1.8.0; fix crash due to not checking for failure to load icon; fix hangs setting FAT label when matches a root folder entry; erase file system signatures before all FileSystem copies; based on the Debian 'Sid' repository as of 2026-01-27; Linux kernel image updated to 6.18.5; added a mechanism to avoid blank screen. There is an issue with help on Virtual Machines. Specifically the menu option Help, Contents opens and displays a black window on Virtual Machines. The workaround is to view help on documentation page. X Desktop GUI fails to display with default boot options? Try Other modes of GParted Live, GParted Live (Safe graphics setting, vga-normal).

The minimum Debian version supported by our scripts has been raised to Debian 12 Bookworm. Debian 11 Bullseye systems will be migrated to a dedicated branch automatically. We highly recommend to upgrade affected systems to Debian 12 Bookworm, following our guide. Once the upgrade has been done, the update to DietPi v10 will be offered on next update check or when running 'dietpi-update'. The minimum DietPi version to support direct updates to DietPi 10 from has been raised to 8.0. Older systems will go through a two-stage process, being upgraded to DietPi 9.20 on a separate branch, and afterwards further to DietPi 10 via master branch, if the Debian version requirement is met as well. DietPi-Software, ownCloud Infinite Scale - this successor of the classic ownCloud file sync and share platform has been added to our software catalogue. DietPi-Software, Uptime-Kuma - this self-hosted monitoring tool has been added to our software catalogue.
I am pleased to announce the release of Liya 2.5, code-named 'Mahi'. This release focuses on refinement, usability, and improving the overall first-use and daily experience. Samba integration is now enabled by default in the Nemo file manager. For Windows 10 and greater, network and Windows shares are discoverable out of the box. For Windows 8.1 and less, please run 'sudo use_smbv1'. Liya Linux 2.5 includes Newelle, an advanced AI chatbot frontend. Newelle allows users to directly use AI models in system interface and/or run local LLMs easily. A guide to set up Newelle will be posted soon in our wiki section. The Liya Welcome application has been included to simplify post-install setup. Graphics drivers can now be installed directly from the Welcome app. Hybrid graphics systems (such as Intel + NVIDIA or Intel + AMD) are now handled more reliably. Liya Linux 2.5 features a single unified Liya package repository, featuring the bare minimum of packages which are required to run Liya. Other packages are outsourced to 'chaotic-aur' and 'blackarch' repositories.
Skywave Linux has been upgraded to version 5.10, bringing some software changes, a kernel upgrade and bug fixes: Linux kernel 6.18.5, with the XanMod efficiency and speed tweaks; adjustments to Tor-Remote and Tor-Controller scripts; added I2P darknet access using Purple/i2pd; adjustments to the Neovim LSP configuration; Neovim plugins have been upgraded; Qtel, the Echolink client, has been removed; upgraded the dwm window manager dwm-flexipatch to version 6.6; updated satellites and transponders for Gpredict and SatDump; expanded the scope of the KiwiSDR list to include OpenWebRX sites; the theme for this upgrade cycle was 'Delegate more to systemd and reduce manual interventions'. I have cleaned out the user's dot profile and xinit files, moving environmental variables to the user's .config directory, for handling by systemd. I also deleted the code which forcefully set the screen dots per inch, based on specs detected by X11. Fonts and application windows are now more consistently sized across more diverse hardware.
This is our first release of the year, bringing a host of improvements to the installer, the new display manager (Plasma Login Manager), and much more. First, we have significantly reworked the installer and added many quality-of-life improvements. The bootloader selection has been moved directly into the installer, featuring a description for each option; Limine is now selected as the default bootloader. Architecture detection now happens at the very beginning of the installation process, which reduces the download size by around 1 Gigabyte. Additionally, we now pass the --needed flag to pacman to avoid reinstalling up-to-date packages. The mount options for NVMes have also been improved when Btrfs is selected, now defaulting to compression level 1. Next, the ISO has been switched to Plasma Login Manager, and the Live ISO now uses Wayland instead of X11.
Three years is a long time for free and open source software! Enough time for 12,525 new packages and 29,932 package updates to the Guix repository. Here are the best highlights: To start, KDE Plasma 6.5 is now available with the new plasma-desktop-service-type. Screenshot of KDE Plasma with a welcome window and the About This System tab of system settings open. The Guix and KDE logos are visible, as well as Konqi. Continuing on desktops, GNOME has been updated from version 42 to 46 and now uses Wayland by default. The gnome-desktop-service-type was made more modular to better customize the default set of GNOME applications. Guix System is now using version 1.0 of the GNU Shepherd, which now supports timed services, kexec reboot and has new services for system logs and log rotation which are now used by Guix System instead of Rottlog and syslogd. There are around 40 new system services to choose from, including Forgejo Runner, RabbitMQ, iwd and dhcpcd to name a few.
